Yoga and bone health

Happy Halloween! Since a common Halloween decoration and costume is a skeleton, we’re talking about how to keep your skeleton dancing around for years to come using yoga.

Asanas, or poses, make up a very physical part of yoga. The poses not only strengthen muscles and improve balance in order to make the body less likely to fall and be injured, but they can actually prevent and even reverse bone loss! That’s right, regular yoga practice of asanas applies tension to both muscles and bones, resulting in increased bone density. Harvard University, Yoga Journal, and the National Institute of Health agree with me, just so you know that I’m not crazy.

Yoga can also help your spine to stay on the straight and narrow. The spine is grand central station for your body. Any kinks in it result in kinks in the information being sent to various parts of the body. Pain, disease, and many other ill affects can all stem from the spine. Posture is not just important because your mom said so, it helps to keep things running smoothly in your whole body.

Agility, strength, peace of mind, and bone health! Yoga has it all, my friends.

Here are a few poses to help improve your bone health: downward dog, tree pose, plank pose, warrior 2, triangle pose, and locust pose. Try some out today…maybe in your costume…maybe looking fierce…
